Student Outcomes Focused Governance

SOFG

The San Diego Unified Board of Education is re-envisioning its governance strategy to focus on student outcomes. This new student outcomes focused governance prioritizes the consistent monitoring of progress toward achieving specific goals for student achievement as set by the Board. The district is taking a collaborative approach to defining those goals by distilling the community’s vision and values into clear, measurable priorities.

WHAT’S BEEN DONE

  • On December 13, 2022, the Board asked that the Superintendent and Board Officers identify and engage an entity to work with the Board on facilitation of a process for the Board and Superintendent to come to consensus on Student Outcomes Focused Governance (SOFG).

  • On April 25, 2023, the Board approved an Agreement with Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS) to assist the district and Board in developing student outcomes-focused governance practices.

  • On July 13, and October 30, 2023, CGCS facilitated Board Workshops as an orientation toward development of a student outcome focused governance model.

  • On November 14, 2023, the Board adopted a two-year implementation timeline.

  • From February 15, 2023 through March 31, 2024, the Board conducted Community Listening Sessions to gather input on the most important things that San Diego Unified students should know and be able to do by the end of elementary, middle, and/or high school; and the things that San Diego Unified should avoid doing or stop doing as it focuses on accomplishing its priorities. In-person sessions were held in each of the five sub-districts, a hybrid session was held specifically for students, two virtual sessions were held via Zoom, and an online survey was available for students, families, educators, and education partners to share their perspective.

WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT

  • On Wednesday, April 17, the Board is engaging in a Board Workshop to review data from the listening sessions and will begin drafting the Goals and Guardrails.

  • Summer 2024, the Board will solicit follow-up feedback on the drafted priorities and adopt the Goals and Guardrails along with the final adoption of the Local Control Accountability Plan, which will be aligned to district priorities.

  • Fall 2024 and onwards, the Board will monitor progress publicly towards accomplishment of Goals & Guardrails and align activities, budget, and system to accomplish the Goals & Guardrails.
