Crawford High School’s New Performing Arts Center Nationally Recognized in Educational Interiors Showcase as One of the Nation’s Most Effective Learning Environments

SAN DIEGO - Crawford High School’s new Performing Arts Center is already gaining national attention.

The 10-month-old facility is featured in the American School & University’s “Educational Interiors Showcase,” which acknowledged Crawford High as one of today’s most effective learning environments.

“It’s wonderful to see Crawford High School be recognized nationally,” said Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, Board of Education Trustee for San Diego Unified. “I am so proud of the facilities improvements we are making throughout the Crawford High School cluster and within my sub-district, benefiting students, families, and entire communities all through our city.”

The magazine, which reaches nearly 60,000 facility planners, school and university administrators, and architects from across the nation, has highlighted educational facilities for the past 33 years.

Each educational facility is chosen through a jury of the American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for education members and administrators, which evaluates submissions from architectural firms, schools, and universities across the country.

This year, the jury chose to feature Colina Del Sol’s neighborhood high school, which has been a vital part of the neighborhood for the past 65 years, serving four generations of students.

Completed in December 2022, the Crawford High Whole Site Modernization Phase III project brought the modern Performing Arts Center to the campus, giving the school a striking new look in the community.

The new three-story facility replaces an aging auditorium and houses twenty classrooms, a performing arts center, and student services administrative offices.

The project also included a drop-off and pick-up area at the corner of Orange Avenue and Colts Way and a new parking lot, which was completed in fall 2023.

These projects follow several others that have recently been completed at Crawford High, including a Whole Site Modernization and multiple sports facilities projects.

Crawford High School opened its doors on April 27, 1958, just a half mile away from its current location. Named after former San Diego Unified Superintendent Dr. Will C. Crawford, the high school started by recruiting students in all grade levels from Hoover High School and nearby Horace Mann Middle School. The following year, Crawford held its first graduation ceremony.
